    WINTER

    Animals in Winter by Henrietta Bancroft...Describes the many different ways animals cope with winter, including migration, hibernation, and food storage. 
    Frog in Winter by Max Velthuijs...Frog's physiology does not permit him to enjoy winter, but his friends help him to make the best of the cold weather. 
    ****Grandma's Promise by Elaine Moore...Kim spends a week after Christmas with her grandmother and enjoys sleeping by the wood stove, ice skating on the pond, and feeding the birds. 
    Mrs. Toggle's Zipper by Robin Pulver...A teacher's zipper gets stuck when the "thingamajig" breaks off.  The school custodian comes to the rescue. 
    ****Katy and the Big Snow by Virginia Lee Burton. Published in 1943 this book is a classic.  Everyone needs Katy, the beautiful, red, crawler tractor, to help them when the big snow proves too much for the smaller snow plows. 
    ****Owl Moon by Jane Yolen...Caldecott Medal winner.  On a winter's night, under a full moon, a young child and Dad trek into the woods to go owling. 
    ***Snowflake Bentley by Jacqueline Briggs Martin...Based on the true story of Wilson Alwyn "Snowflake" Bentley who was one of the first known photographers of snowflakes. 

    CHAPTER BOOKS 
    ****Tales from Dimwood Forest by Avi. Newbery Medal winner Avi demonstrates his mastery of animal fantasy genre with his critically acclaimed Poppy stories. This six book series is an irresistible blend of romance, suspense, and adventure. 
    ****Charlotte's Web by E.B.White.  Published in 1952 this novel tells the story of a pig named Wilbur and his friendship with a barn spider named Charlotte.

    ****  Anne of Green Gables by Lucy Maud Montgomery
