Math
In Grade 6 Math, many skills acquired in upper elementary are reinforced, and new topics are introduced. Math 7 is an extension of Math 6, with many Pre-algebra lessons incorporated into its units. Pre-Algebra is another course offered to students who excel in Math 6 and offers a more rigorous curriculum that incorporates many real-life mini projects and examples. Algebra 1 is offered to 8th graders who take Pre-algebra in 7th grade. This course is an intense compilation of pre-algebra material and new topics that will be reinforced in high school during Algebra II and beyond. STEM projects are incorporated into all math courses, and mini, hands-on projects are incorporated into the curriculum.
Social Studies
In sixth grade, students study World History covering how and why ancient civilizations developed around the world. Seventh graders learn how our nation began in the school’s US History class. This program starts with exploration and colonization and moves through the development of the colonies and up to the Revolutionary War. We also see how our government was formed and the causes and effects of the expansion of our country. In eighth grade, students continue to study US History up to the Civil War and Reconstruction and then move on to the World Wars. One of St. Kevin School’s goals is to ensure that students graduate with a complete knowledge and understanding of how and why civilizations and governments develop as well as the cause and effect of important events in our own civilization.
Science
In Middle School, students learn about the three major categories of science--Earth, Life, and Physical Science. Saint Kevin School ensures students have an understanding of all three categories. In sixth grade, the class explores Earth and space, rocks and minerals, weather and atmosphere, and much more. Seventh graders explore Life Science through investigations using the scientific method. Students explore viruses and cells, genetics and heredity, kingdoms, traits and structure, and evolution and creationism. Eighth graders study energy, force, and motion, electromagnetics, and chemistry. Saint Kevin School’s goal is to ensure students have all the tools they need for success in the next level of their education.
